Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father had left the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she realized that the school was not right for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning the position on her 4th application. Her classmate included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate.
